A previous assignment of the structure of (+)-bazzanene is revised based on chemical correlation with (+)-trichodiene (II); the absoluteconfiguration has been determined to be as shown in structure (I), a diastereoisomer of (+)-trichodiene.

The bicyclic sesquiterpene (+)-bazzanene (I) was treated with formic acid to give the tricyclic sesquiterpene (±)-cyclobazzanene (II), which was shown to be a racemate of the novel sesquiterpene (II) by X-ray diffraction analysis of the p-bromobenzoate derivative.
