Abstract Treatment of peptidoglycan monomer ( 1 ) from Brevibacterium divaricatum with aqueous ammonia led to cleavage of the C-3 ether linkage in the N -acetylmuramoyl residue to give the d -lactoylpentapeptide and a saturated disaccharide. By using 13 C-n.m.r. spectroscopy, the disaccharide was identified as chitobiosamine. Alkaline treatment of model compounds under similar conditions showed that
