Dialdehydes undergo ‘radical then aldol’ cyclizationcascades upon treatment with SmI2, generating four contiguous stereocenters with high diastereocontrol. The scope of the process has been explored and the cascade has been extended to also include lactone reduction.

Waiting in line: Aldehyde groups take turns reacting in a SmI2‐mediated cyclizationcascade to form the skeleton 2 of the antibacterial natural product pleuromutilin. Two rings and four contiguous stereocenters are constructed during the cascade with complete diastereocontrol.
