The intramolecularisotopeeffect for the cytochrome P-450b omega-hydroxylation of (1,1,1-/sup 2/H/sub 3/)-n-octane was separated into itsprimary and secondarycomponents by the method of Hanzlik. The primaryisotopeeffect was found to lie between 7.3 and 7.9 while the secondaryisotopeeffect was found to lie between 1.09 and 1.14. These data are consistent with a highly symmetrical transition state

present a highly deuterium atom economical approach for the synthesis of deuterated alcohols via the single electron transfer (SET) reductive deuteration of acyl chlorides.
