    Versatile Superhydrophobic Surfaces from a Bioinspired Approach

    We report the surface wettability and morphology of conductive polymer films obtained by electrodeposition of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (i.e., PEDOT) derivatives containing an alkyl chain (PEDOTHn with n = 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12) or a phenyl (PEDOTPh) group in the 2-position. Even if the general approach in the literature is the use of highly fluorinated tail to reach superhydrophobic materials, we point out that versatile surfaces (from hydrophilic to superhydrophobic) can be obtained, in one step, without any fluorinated chemistry. Indeed, superhydrophobic surfaces were formed, using Bu4NPF6 and acetonitrile as electrolyte, by electrodeposition of PEDOT derivatives substituted with n-C10H21 and n-C12H25 chains, while the polymer films substituted with n-C8H17 and n-C6H13 were hydrophobic and those substituted with n-C4H9 and phenyl were hydrophilic. In the PEDOTHn series, the polymer films were structured only from n-C8H17, which proves the influence of long alkyl chains on both the surface wettability and the surface morphology due to the increase in polymer insolubility. By changing acetonitrile by dichloromethane, as solvent of electropolymerization, it is possible to produce smooth surfaces and as a consequence to determine the chemical and physical parts of the contact angles as well as roughness factors or air fractions following the Wenzel and Cassie-Baxter theories. By changing the salt for the electrodeposition, it also was possible to reach superhydrophobic surfaces even with short alkyl chains as well as without alkyl chains but using perfluorinated salts. In this work the mechanism to reach structured surfaces is also discussed. This work contributes to the formation of bioinspired superhydrophobic surfaces.

    Verfahren zur Herstellung von neutralen Poly(ethylen-3,4-dioxythiophenen) der allgemeinen Formel (I),    worin R1 und R2unabhängig voneinander jeweils für H oder C1 bis C9-Alkyl stehen, wobei für den Fall, dass R1 für H steht R2 auch CH2-O-R3 sein kann, mit R3 = H oder C1 bis C9-Alkyl, Cycloalkyl oder Aralkyl, und n für 2 bis 200 steht, wobei geeignete Thiophenmonomere in einem organischen Lösemittel mit einem Oxidationsmittel umgesetzt werden und das Oxidationsmittel in einem Unterschuss von 50 bis 99,9 % der stöchiometrisch erforderlichen Menge eingesetzt wird. So erhältliche neutrale Poly(ethylen-3,4-dioxythiophene) zeichnen sich insbesondere durch ihre Löslichkeit in organischen Lösemitteln aus.

    There is provided an oxidant and dopant which can produce a conductive polymer. The conductive polymer can be used in a solid electrolyte capacitor as solid electrolyte. The solid electrolyte capacitor can be provided with improved breakdown voltage and voltage resistance, as well as less generation of the defects due to leak current. There is provided an oxidant and dopant solution for conductive polymer production including an oxidant and dopant for an organic ferric sulfonate, and an alcohol with a carbon number of 1 to 4. The oxidant and dopant solution further includes a compound with a glycidyl group, or its ring-opened compound. Faborably, a polyalcohol is further added. Using the oxidant and dopant solution, a thiophene or its derivative is subject to an oxidation polymerization to prepare a conductive polymer, which can be used as solid electrolyte of a solid electrolyte capacitor.

    Process for the preparation of neutral poly(ethylene-3,4-dioxythiophenes) of the general formula (I) 1 in which R 1 and R 2 , independently of one another, each represent H or C 1 to C 9 -alkyl, it also being possible for R 2 to be CH 2 —O—R 3 with R 3 =H or C 1 to C 9 -alkyl, cycloalkyl or aralkyl, when R 1 represents H, and n represents 2 to 200, suitable thiophene monomers being reacted in an organic solvent with an oxidizing agent and the oxidizing agent being used in 50 to 99.9% of the stoichiometrically required amount. The neutral poly(ethylene-3,4-dioxythiophenes) thus obtainable are distinguished in particular by their solubility in organic solvents.
