    Provided is a highly efficient method for the production of aldehydes and ketones, which is inexpensive, exhibits high reactivity, and is capable of easy separation of byproduct after the reaction. More particularly, there is provided a method for producing an aldehyde or a ketone, comprising at least an oxidation step of oxidizing a primary alcohol or a secondary alcohol in the presence of a polymeric carbodiimide represented by the following formula (1) and having a weight-average molecular weight of 300 to 5000, and a sulfoxide compound, together with an acid and a base, or together with a salt of the acid and the base.

  • Deuterated analogues of 4,8-dimethyldecanal, the aggregation pheromone ofTribolium castaneum: synthesis and pheromonal activity

    To elucidate the deuterium isotope effect (DIE) in pheromonal activity and to investigate the biosynthetic pathway of 4,8-dimethyldecanal (4,8-DMD; 1), the aggregation pheromone of the red flour beetle (Tribolium castaneum), deuterated analogues of 4,8-DMDs (2, 3, 4, and 5), were synthesized and their pheromonal activities were tested using a two-hole pitfall olfactometer. Although no apparent DIE was observed in their pheromonal activities, 4,8-DMD-1-d1 (2) was less attractive than other analogues, which suggested that the bond distance between the formyl group of 1 and its receptor was critical in pheromone recognition by T. castaneum.     Copolymers having linked internal polyether blocks and internal polyamide blocks have advantageous physical properties and solvent-gelling abilities. The copolymer may be prepared from a reaction mixture that contains 1,4-cyclohexane dicarboxylic acid (CHDA) and poly(alkyleneoxy) diamine (PAODA). Optionally, the reaction mixture contains no monofunctional compound reactive with either amine or carboxylic acid groups, however some of this monofunctional compound may be present. Dimer diamine and/or dimer acid may be present in the reaction mixture. A copolymer may also be prepared from a reaction mixture containing dimer acid and at least two diamine compound(s) including PAODA and short-chain aliphatic diamine having 2-6 carbons (SDA), wherein: a) the reaction mixture comprises x grams of PAODA and y grams of SDA, and x/(x+y) is 0.8-0.98; b) the reaction mixture weighs z grams, and x/z is at least 0.25; and c) the reaction mixture contains either no co-diacid, or comprises a small amount of co-diacid, wherein, if the reaction mixture comprises a small amount of co-diacid, then acid equivalents from co-diacid contribute less than 25% of the total acid equivalents present in the reaction mixture.
