Trifluoromethyl iodide is oxidised by chlorine trifluoride in C6F14 at –78 °C to give trifluoromethyliodine(V) tetrafluoride. Evidence for the formation of trifluoromethyliodine(III) difluoride has also been obtained. CF3IF4 Decomposes readily at 20 °C but is more stable in this respect than CF3IF2.
