Abstract α,β-Unsaturated imides and α,β-unsaturated esters were found to undergo alcoholysis in the presence of trimethylphosphine. The reaction is initiated by nucleophilic addition of trimethylphosphine to the double bond of the α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compound.
