    O-Glycosylation of a variety of long chain alcohols with totally unprotected uronic acids (D-glucuronic and D-galacturonic acids) and neutral carbohydrates (D-glucose, D-galactose, D-mannose and D-glucofuranurono-6,3-lactone), performed in heterogeneous media and promoted by Lewis acids (ferric chloride or boron trifluoride diethyl etherate), afforded alkyl D-glycofuranosiduronic acids and alkyl D-glycofuranosides, respectively, in high yields.     An improved synthesis of n-octyl beta-D-galactofuranoside was described using micro-wave activation. The resulting alkyl furanoside showed antibacterial activity against Mycobacterium smegmatis, a non-pathogenic model of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It was further incorporated into a biodegradable PBAT/sodium caseinate polymer. The resulting biomaterial loaded with 5% of the pharmacophore retained the mycobacteriostatic properties and developed a mycobactericidal activity on contact and at the periphery of the film.     The preparation of O-hexofuranosides was accomplished from unprotected 1-thioimidoyl furanosides as donors. The present methodology was first used for the synthesis of octyl galactofuranoside and further extended to D-galactofuranose-containing disaccharides. Within this study, we emphasized the need for additional complexing cations to maintain the furanose ring in its initial size. After experimentation, calcium ion was first used concomitantly with trimethylsilyl trifluoromethanesulfonate, the latter being able to activate the thioimidate and the former being likely to inhibit ring expansion. Moreover, an improvement was performed by using copper(II) trifluoromethanesulfonate which could then meet the requirements as both promoter and complexing agent.
