Allylic sulfides were synthesized from allylic alcohols 1 using S, S'-bis(1-phenyl-1H-tetrazol-5-yl) dithiocarbonate (2) by means of a single-step reaction. The allylic sulfides were coupled with a Grignard reagent or carbanion in the presence of a catalytic amount of copper(I) bromide or palladium(0).

carbanions and ligands on π-allylpalladium has been investigated in the substitution of primary or tertiary terpene derivatives. Conditions have been found under which the substitution takes place essentially at one or the other end of the allylic system. This provides a new and convenient way to obtain compounds with quaternary carbonatoms, which has been exemplified by the synthesis of 3,3-dimethyl-4-pentenenitrile
1,3-REARRANGEMENT OF ALLYLIC<i>p</i>-TOLYL SULFONES CATALYZED By [Pd(PPh3)4] AND ITS APPLICATION TO THE SYNTHESIS OF α,β-UNSATURATED KETONES
The treatment of allylic p-tolyl sulfones with a catalytic amount of [Pd(PPh3)4] gave the 1,3-rearrangement products in high yields. A convenient method for the preparation of α,β-unsaturated ketones using [Pd(PPh3)4] as a catalyst from the 1,3-rearrangement products, 2-tosylhomoallyl alcohols, is also described.

The reaction of allyl esters with sodium p-tolylsulfinate in tetrahydrofuran and methanol catalyzed by Pd(PPh3)4 gave the regio- and stereocontrolled allylic p-tolyl sulfones in good yields at room or lower temperature.
The role of the palladium ligands on the yield and regioselectivity of the reaction of conjugated dienes with arenesulphinic acids (or of allylic acetates with sodium arenesulphinates) has been investigated. Arenesulphinic acids catalyse the isomerisation of allylic sulphones.
