    meso-7,11-Dimethylheptadecane, a female sex pheromone component of the spring hemlock looper and the pitch pine looper, was synthesized from ethyl 2-(bromomethyl) propenoate in nine steps and 14% overall yield. The key step in the synthesis is the highly diastereo-selective chelation-controlled radical reaction of diethyl 4-benzyloxy-2,6-dimethyleneheptanedioate with pentyl iodide performed in the presence of 6 equiv of MgBr2 center dot OEt2.     Lewis acidic zeolites are used to synthesize unsaturated dicarboxylic acid esters via aldol condensation of keto esters. Hafnium-containing BEA (Hf-BEA) zeolites catalyze the condensation of ethyl pyruvate into diethyl 2-methyl-4-oxopent-2-enedioate and diethyl 2-methylene-4-oxopentanedioate (an itaconic acid ester analogue) with a selectivity of ca. 80% at ca. 60% conversion in a packed-bed reactor

    A system and method to improve the color acceptance of color viscosity stabilized latex paints. The system includes a base paint, 0.05 wt% to 5 wt% of a color viscosity stabilizing compound; a colorant compound, and: a sufficient amount of a hydrophobically modified alkali swell able emulsion ('HASE') thickener to improve the color acceptance properties of the paint, which amount is typically 0.02 wt% to 0.5 wt% of the paint, and optionally, 0. i wt% to 5 wt% of a condensation polymer associative thickener including polyether polyurethanes, polyether poiyols, polyether polyacetals, and polyether aminoplasts. The system demonstrates improved color acceptance as measured by rub-ups and ΔE values.
