Each chalcone, flavanone, flavonol, and aurone with the 3,4-dihydroxy groups in the B-ring showed high antioxidant activity.   A new seven step synthesis of methoxalen, 9-methoxy-7H-furo[3,2-g][1]benzopyran-7-one, starting from 2-chloro-2′-hydroxy-3′,4′-dimethoxyacetophenone is described. The yields in every step are good (60-100%).
