Metabolism of the aza-arenes quinoline, isoquinoline, quinazoline, and quinoxaline by a mutant strain of the bacterium Pseudomonasputida resulted in attack at the carbocyclic ring (to yield stable cis-dihydrodiols and phenols) and at the heterocyclic ring (to yieldphenols and ring cleavage products).

Arene oxides of naphthalene, quinoline, triphenylene, benzo[e]pyrene, and dibenz[a,c]anthracene have been synthesised in enantiopure (1a–c) or racemic form (1d–f), free from oxepine isomers (3d–f) from cis-diol precursors (7a–f)via chloroacetate (9a–f) or dimesylate (13a) intermediates.

dibenzoyltartrate salt diastereoisomers. X-ray crystallographic analysis of the (+)-dibenzoyltartrate salt obtained from reaction of (+)-dibenzoyltartaric acid and (−)-trans-6-bromo-5-hydroxy-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-quinoline, when allied to a stereochemical correlation sequence linking the arene oxide, trans-dihydrodiol and cis-dihydrodiol enantiomers, provides an unequivocal assignment of absoluteconfiguration for
