    Abstract Five sapogenins and three saponins were identified in bulbs of 14 cytologically defined Cyclamen species and their structures were determined by means of mass, 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy. In addition to the known products of hydrolysis, primulagenin A was found, and cyclamiretin C was shown to be identical with cyclamigenin C.     The invention provides novel saponin mixtures and compounds which are isolated from the species Acacia victoriae and methods for their use. These compounds may contain a triterpene moiety, such as acacic or oleanolic acid, to which oligosaccharides and monoterpenoid moieties are attached. The mixtures and compounds have properties related to the regulation of apoptosis and cytotoxicity of cells and exhibit potent anti-tumor effects against a variety of tumor cells. The present application is a continuation-in-part of co-pending U.S. Patent Application Ser. No. 60/099,066, filed Sep. 3, 1998, and a continuation-in-part of U.S. patent application Ser. No. 60/085,997, filed May 19, 1998. The entire text of each of the above-referenced disclosures is specifically incorporated by reference herein without disclaimer.

    The present invention relates to an Androsace umbellata Merr. extract having anticancer activity and a triterpene saponin compound isolated therefrom, more particularly to an Androsace umbellata (Lour.) Merr. extract, triterpene saponin compounds isolated therefrom, saxifragifolin B and saxifragifolin D, which inhibit the growth of cancer cells and induce apoptosis of cancer cells, and thus are useful for preparing a composition for preventing and treating cancers and a method of isolating a triterpene saponin compound from an Androsace umbellata Merr. extract.

    The present invention pertains to complexes comprising sterols and saponins. The complexes are capable of binding a genetic determinant including a polynucleotide. The complexes may further comprise a lipophilic moiety, optionally a lipophilic moiety comprising a contacting group and/or a targeting ligand, and/or a saccharide moiety. The complexes may further comprise an immunogenic determinant and/or an antigenic determinant and/or a medicament and/or a diagnostic compound.
