A thermal cross-coupling reaction of α-sulfur-substituted alkylstannanes with acid chlorides is described. A range of substrates can be used for the present reaction and the reaction proceeds by just mixing two components under reflux in mesitylene to give the corresponding α-sulfur-substituted ketones in good yields.

The relative stability of various organosulfur radicals is estimated by competitive elimination technique using tributyltin radical and acetophenone derivatives having two different sulfur substituents at α and α positions.

α-Keton sulfides are versatile building blocks in organic synthesis. From thioic acids and alkenes, we were able to develop the direct synthesis of α-keton thiolesters via photocatalytic oxidative radical additions. This reaction well matches the idea of green chemistry. It takes the advantage of thioxanthone as an inexpensive organic photocatalyst, O2 as a green oxidant, EtOAc as a green solvent

three-component reaction involving elemental sulfur is disclosed for achieving a metal-free, oxidant-free synthesis of thioesters in a high atom-economical, step-economical and chemoselective manner. A mechanistic investigation indicates that the use of elemental sulfur to trap acyl radical derived fromradical umpolung of α-keto acid with an electrochemical design can efficiently generate a carbonyl
