The reaction of substituted germanium and tin halides, RGeX3, RSnX3 (X Cl, Br), where R is CpFe(CO)2, with bis(carbonyl-π-cyclopentadienylnickel) has been found to provide a facile route to some novel heterotrimetallic systems, CpFe(CO)2MX2Ni(CO)Cp (M Ge, Sn; X Cl, Br), containing FeSnNi and FeGeNi bonds.
