A straightforward, mild, one-pot method has been found for the preparation of quinolines via a multi-component reaction using acetals or cyclic acetals, aromatic amines and alkynes catalysed by Bi(OTf)3. It gives good yields under mild conditions. This approach has been successfully applied for the synthesis of a range of quinolines with a variety of functional groups.
polysubstituted quinolinesfrom o-vinyl anilines and aldehydes. The reaction proceeds in a cascade manner through condensation, electrocyclization and dehydrogenation, and gives access to a wide range of quinolines with alkyl and/or aryl substituents as demonstrated with 40 examples. The metal-free catalytic procedure allows a heterogeneous protocol for the synthesis of various polysubstituted quinolines. The
A series of substituted quinolines was prepared from arylamines, aldehydes, and terminal olefins (see scheme). The palladium‐catalyzed sequentialformation of CCbonds proceeds smoothly with both electron‐deficient and electron‐rich olefins. When acrylic acid is used as terminal olefin, decarboxylation occurs to provide 2‐substituted quinolines.

Three become one: Multiply substituted quinolines were synthesized from diaryliodoniums, alkynes, and nitriles by a CuII‐catalyzed method. This cascade annulation is highly regioselective, step‐economic, flexible with regard to the functional groups, and could potentially be applied to the synthesis of complex molecules.

A rapid and efficient method for the preparation of various poly-substituted quinolines has been developed through the Friedlander condensation of 2-aminoarylketone or 2-aminoarylaldehyde with carbonyl compounds in the presence of p-toluene sulphonic acid, which was achieved by both microwaveirradiation and conventional heating under solvent-free conditions.
