    There are described compounds of formula I, in which R1 is phenyl substituted by halogen, alkoxy, alkyl, carboxy-alkyl, -NR4R5, carboxy or alkoxy carbonyl, R3 is hydrogen, alkyl, mono- or di-carboxy alkyl, halo, alkoxy, phenyl, halo-phenyl, hydroxy, phenoxy, thiol, thioalkoxy, thiophenoxy, -NR4Rs, cyano, -COOH, carboxyureido, -CF3, -CORe, hydroxyalkyl, aminoalkyl, or alkoxy substituted by NR4R5, ring A is a benzene or a pyridine ring which optionally carries up to 4 substituents R3, which may be the same or different, R4 and Rs, which may be the same or different, each represent hydrogen, phenyl, halophenyl or alkyl, the alkyl optionally being substituted by alkoxy or by a mono- or di- alkyl or unsubstituted amino group; or R4 and Rs, together with the nitrogen atom to which they are attached, form a piperidine, morpholine or an optionally alkyl substitued piperazine ring, and R6 is hydrogen or alkyl, provided that (i) when R, is phenyl substituted by chlorine or bromine, ring A is not a benzene ring substituted by chlorine or bromine, or (ii) when R, is phenyl substituted by methoxy R3 is not phenyl, and pharmaceutically acceptable salts, esters and amides thereof. There are also described methods for making the compounds and pharmaceutical, e.g. anti-inflammatory, compositions containing the compounds.

    A thin film culture device for detecting yeast and mold microorganisms in a sample is provided. The culture device comprises a body comprising a self-supporting substrate having a first major surface and a second major surface; a first adhesive composition disposed on a portion of the first major surface of the substrate; a substantially dry, cold-water-soluble first hydrogel-forming composition adhered to the first adhesive composition; and a plurality of indicator agents. The plurality of indicator agents comprises three indicator agents for detecting distinct glycosidase enzyme activities, an indicator agent for detecting an alkyl esterase enzyme activity, and an indicator agent for detecting a phosphatase enzyme activity, wherein each of the plurality of indicator agents comprises a detectable reporter group. A method of using the culture device is also provided.

    This invention relates to a method for detecting the existence or measuring the concentration of total viable bacteria in a test sample from a food product. A medium is provided which contains three or more different enzyme substrates each having a nutrient moiety and a detectable moiety linked together. When a substrate is hydrolysed by a bacterial enzyme to create a separate detectable moiety, it causes or produces a detectable signal. These substrates produce detectable signals when any one of a phosphatase enzyme, a glycosidase enzyme or a peptidase enzyme is present in the medium.

    The presence or absence of a predetermined target first generation environmental sourced microbe in an environmentally derived sample is determined by adding a testing medium to the sample, or vice versa. The testing medium provides a selective growth medium for the target microbe and includes a specific nutrient which only the target microbe can metabolize. This specific nutrient is modified by attaching a sample-altering moiety thereto, thereby converting the nutrient to a nutrient-indicator. The sample-altering moiety is activated to alter the sample only if the specific nutrient is metabolized by the target microbe. The sample-altering moiety can be a material which changes the color of the sample (visible or non-visible) or changes an electrical characteristic of the sample, or alters some other detectable characteristic of the sample. The testing media does not have to be kept sterile, and the testing procedure does not have to be performed in a sterile environment. The medium also includes an accelerant which hastens the advancement of the target microbes to the log phase of growth during the testing procedure.
