  At room temperature under an atmosphere of carbon monoxide the iron alkyls, (η5C5H5)(CO)2Fe-R (R = CH2CH3, CH2CH2CH3, CH2CH2CH(CH3)2, CH2CH2C(CH3)3) react with triethyloxonium tetrafluoroborate to provide the iron ethoxycarbenes, (η5-C5H5(CO)2Fe+=C(OEt)(R)BF4− in moderate to very good yield.
