Non-transition metal-catalyzed synthesis of phenacylbromides was achieved through K2S2O8-mediated tandem hydroxybromination and oxidation of styrenes. The advantages of this reaction are its excellent functional group compatibility, mild reaction conditions (60 °C) and use of pure water as reaction medium. Based upon experimental observations, a plausible reaction mechanism is proposed.

A process for making primary haloalkanes by catalytic distillation of internal haloalkanes which comprises a) introducing an internal haloalkane feed into a catalytic distillation column; b) isomerizing at least a portion of the internal haloalkane feed in the presence of an internal haloalkane isomerization catalyst at a temperature at or above the boiling point of the internal haloalkanes and below the temperature and pressure at which hydrogen halide is formed to form primary haloalkanes; and removing the primary haloalkanes from the catalytic distillation column.
Determining halogen toxicity level of halogenated compounds

A method for determining the halogen toxicity level in a sample containing halogenated compounds, especially halogen-containing rubbers, utilizes a polychromatic ion source of a mass spectrometer for ionizing a reagent gas capable of producing thermal electrons. The thermal electrons are captured with a halogen-containing compound to form halogen atomic anions or halogen atomic cluster anions. The halogen-containing compound has been passed through a gas chromatograph prior to said capturing of thermal electrons. A mass spectrogram is obtained following said capturing of electrons. The halogen atomic anions or halogen atomic cluster anions are speciated and quantified using a mass chromatogram produced from the combination of said gas chromatography and said mass spectrometer.
