The [α-(alkoxycarbonyl)vinyl]diisobutylaluminium reagents generated by hydroalumination from α, β-acetylenicesters and DIBAL-H were reacted with N-acylimines of hexafluoroacetone and methyl trifluoropyruvate to give trifluoromethyl substituted dehydro-β-amino acid derivatives.

A convenient synthesis of fluorinated b-amino acids via Morita-Baylis-Hillman reaction is described. Hydrogenation of Morita-Baylis-Hillman adducts or cuprate addition to the double bond provides ready access to a-substituted b,b-bis(trifluorometh- yl) b-amino acids.
