The first successful Pd(OAc)2, N-donor ligand and base mediated Heck coupling reaction of aryl halides and alkenes in water is described. The corresponding Heck products were obtained in good to excellent yields.

In our continuing studies concerning the versatility of the acid-catalyzed conversion of cinnamates to calix[4]resorcinarenes, we have demonstrated that 2,6-dimethoxycinnamic acid ethyl ester 3 undergoes an interesting rearrangement to afford the same calix[4]resorcinarenes as those obtained from the 2,4-dimethoxy isomer 1. The experimental results were substantiated by molecular mechanics calculations.

An Efficient Method for the Synthesis of a Novel Leukotriene B<sub>4</sub> Receptor Antagonist, ONO-4057, via Michael Reaction of Dihydroresorcinol
A practical method for the synthesis of ONO-4057, a highly potent and orally active leukotriene B4 (LTB4) receptor antagonist, was developed. This method includes improved synthesis of a key intermediate, 1,3-dioxo-2-(2-ethoxycarbonylethyl)cyclohexane (6).
