  Sulfonamides of anthranilic esters react regiospecifically with halogenated benzo- and naphthoquinones in the presence of fluoride ions in dimethylformamide. Highly substituted products are thus made available for conversion to a wide variety of highly substituted acridones some of which are difficult to obtain by other means.

  α,β- β, γ-unsaturated esters can be converted by strong base and chlorotrimethylsilane to the corresponding mixed vinylketene acetals which are shown to be particularly useful and generally applicable reagents for the regiospecific annulation of halogenoquinones. The reaction proceeds readily with a variety of substrates including benzoquinones.

  The chemoselectivity of [4 + 2] cycloadditions involving electronrich cross-conjugated trienes and halogenated quinones has been examined. The approach provides improved preparations of 6-acetyl-2,3,7-trihydroxyjuglone, solorinic and norsolorinic acids, and averythrin. It also confirms the structure proposed for haematommone and 3,8-dihydroxy-4-methoxy-2-methoxycarbonyl-1-methyl-anthraquinone but invalidates that of sopheranin.
