    The reactions of 2-methylquinoline (7), 2-methylbenzothiazole (25), and related compounds 8-11 and 26-30 with benzoyl cyanide (1) or 4-nitrobenzoyl cyanide (2) proceeded via the cyanohydrin derivatives to afford the corresponding C-acylated products 12-17 and 31-36.

    The i.r.solution spectra of a series of 2-ketomethylquinolines have been studied. Tautomeric ratios have been determined by n.m.r. spectroscopy. With one exception the compounds were substantially or exclusively in the enaminone forms. The only compound carrying an α-methyl group (18) proved to be solely in the ketone form.

    A series of new azines were prepared in three steps. Structures of all compounds have been elucidated using spectroscopic methods and elemental analysis. Our studies show that in chloroform solution generally two tautomeric forms are in equilibrium. In some cases, one tautomer was the dominant species. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
