Abstract A new sesquiterpene, (7 R ,10 R )-carota-1,4-dienaldehyde was identified in Rosa rugosa leaves, and its structure elucidated by spectroscopic and chemical methods. The new compound was markedly unstable under air exposure to give several oxidized derivatives, in which rugosal A was found as the main product due to the 1,4-diene structure.
