    A cosmetic composition includes, in a physiologically acceptable medium, at least one statistical copolymer with a linear main chain of ethylenic nature, in which the copolymer: (i) has a weight-average molecular mass of between 15,000 and 600,000 g/mol, and has: (a) at least 70% by weight of “monomer units” derived from monomers for which the homopolymers are hydrophobic and have a glass transition temperature of greater than 40° C., (b) at least one “monomer unit” derived from an at least partially neutralized ionic hydrophilic monomer, (c) 0 to 25% by weight of “monomer units” derived from additional monomers for which the homopolymers have a glass transition temperature of less than 40° C., chosen from: the acrylates of formula: CH 2 ═CHCOOR 12 in which R 12 represents a linear or branched C 1 to C 12 alkyl group with the exception of a tert-butyl group, in which is (are) optionally intercalated one or more identical or different heteroatoms, the alkyl group also possibly being optionally substituted with one or more identical or different substituents chosen from hydroxyl groups and halogen atoms, and the methacrylates of formula: CH 2 ═C(CH 3 )COOR 14 in which R 14 represents a linear C 4 to C 12 alkyl group or a branched C 5 to C 12 alkyl group, and (ii) has an overall glass transition temperature of greater than or equal to 45° C.

    Random or block copolymers of a (meth)acrylic ester, which comprise structural units represented by general formulae (I) and (II) and have a number-average molecular weight of 1,000 to 50,000, a weight-average molecular weight (Mw) to number-average molecular weight (Mn) ratio, M w/Mn, of 1.00 to 1.40, and a ratio of the repeating structural units represented by formula (I) to those represented by formula (II) of 1/9 to 9/1 (wherein R1 and R2 each independently represents hydrogen or methyl; R3 represents an optionally substituted C7-15 alicyclic group or an alkyl group having the alicyclic group; and R4 represents hydrogen, an optionally substituted C1-12 alkyl, optionally substituted C3-6 alicyclic or heterocyclic group, or substituted silyl group having a C1-8 alkyl and/or aryl group). The copolymers have each a unimodal narrow molecular weight distribution and an essential skeleton having at least one segment with a controlled structure comprising (meth)acrylic ester units each having an organic group containing a bulky alicyclic group.

    A comb copolymer viscosity modifier may be made by polymerization comprising at least, or consisting essentially of, the following monomers: (a) a hydrogenated polybutadiene-based (alk)acrylate ester macromonomer (which repeat units may comprise from 7.0 wt% to 18 wt% of the repeat units of the comb copolymer viscosity modifier); (b) a C3-C8 alkyl (alk)acrylate ester monomer (which repeat units may comprise from 40 wt% to 71 wt% or from 45 wt% to 64 wt% of the repeat units of the comb copolymer viscosity modifier); and (c) a C12-C24 alkyl (alk)acrylate ester monomer, wherein repeat units based on the C12-C24 alkyl (alk)acrylate ester monomer comprise at least 21.0 wt% (and optionally up to 35.0 wt%) of repeat units of the comb copolymer viscosity modifier. Lubricant compositions comprising the comb copolymer viscosity modifier, as well as uses thereof and methods for modifying viscosity, are also contemplated herein.
