The chiralmalonates, (R)-[1-13C;2-2H]malonate and (S)-[1-13C;2-2H]malonate, have been synthesised and their absolute configuration confirmed usingfattyacidsynthase and a novel procedure based on massspectrometry.

The chiral malonates were used to investigate the steric course of fattyacid synthase from rat liver and the fattyacid synthase and 6-methylsalicylic acid synthase from Penicillium patulum.
