A general procedure for the synthesis of diverse cyclopentanols via free-radical cyclization of 1,3-oxathiolan-5-ones is described. This permits the rapid assembly, by intramolecular annulation, of various ring systems for use in total synthesis.

An organocatalyzed intramolecular carbonyl-enereaction was developed to produce carbocyclic and heterocyclic 5- and 6-membered rings from a citronellal-derived trifluoroketone and a variety of aldehydes. A phosphoramide derivative was found to promote the cyclization of the trifluoroketone, whereas a less acidic phosphoric acid proved to be a superior catalyst for the aldehyde substrates.
The acid-catalyzed cyclizations of unsaturated carbonyl compounds utilizing silica gel at high pressure

The ene-like cyclizations of a series of unsaturatedcarbonylcompounds have been studied using silica gel at high pressure (15 kbar) as a new catalytic system. This new method is general for forming 5- and 6-membered ring carbocycles. The mildness of this method was demonstrated by the successful cyclization of a vinyl cyciopropyl aldehyde.
