The palladium(II)-copper(II)-mediated demercuration of cycloalkyl- and cycloalkylmethylmercuric chlorides exhibit mechanistic changes as a function of ring size, with elimination-readdition of [HPdX] being important in cyclohexyl systems but direct carbocation formation dominating in cyclooctyl cases.
