A novel allylic hydroxylation by mCPBA of triterpenes bearing stericallyhinderedolefin is catalyzed by Fe(PFPP)Cl. Oleanolic acid, ursolic acid, dihydrolanosterol and their derivatives are converted to the corresponding allylic alcohols by mCPBAFe(PFPP)Cl under mild conditions. The two main hydroperoxides from the auto-oxidation of lanostenylacetate in ethyl acetate at 50° after 14 days, are the 7 β-hydroperoxy- and the 11 β-hydroperoxy-derivatives. Six minor peroxides are also present.
