  Unlike insects, some of the tiny Collembola use large terpenes as epicuticular lipids. The identification and synthesis of socialane, the first cyclic regular nonaprenyl terpene from the cuticle of the springtail Hypogastrura socialis is reported. In the background, the nanostructure of the superhydrophobic collembolan cuticle is shown.
