The influence of allylic oxy- and acyloxy- substituents on the stereoselectivity of osmium tetroxide oxidations of ring A unsaturated gibberellin derivatives is described. The results are applied to the synthesis of the methyl esters of two new trihydroxylated gibberellins GA78 (1) and GA79 (3).

Abstract Extracts of mature grain of Triticum aestivum (cv Maris Huntsman) were analysed by GC-MS and found to contain two gibberellins with a 1β,2β-vicinal diol, namely GA 79 and a new gibberellin, 2β-hydroxyGA 61 . The structure of the new GA metabolite was confirmed by comparison with a synthetic sample prepared in nine steps and 15% overall yield from GA 7 methyl ester and assigned the GA number
