.alpha.-Thujene is prepared in high yields by isomerizing 1 mole of sabinene with 0.2 to 0.5 moles of an alkali metal, preferably lithium and 0.3 to 0.8 moles of a primary or secondary amine, preferably ethylenediamine. Formation of by-products such as p-cymene is minimized.
