the adduct formed, has been established as 2-isopropylidene-4-methyl-7-carboxy-2,3,3a,6,7,7a-hexahydroindanone (IVa) and the mechanism of its formation from the adduct (II) discussed. Some hitherto unreported reactions of the maleic anhydride adduct (II) and its derivatives are described. These throw light on the stereochemistry of the adduct and derived products.
