A novel acetylenic nor-sesquiterpene, chamaecynone, and its related natural products, isochamaecynone and dihydroisochamaecynone, have been synthesized starting from α-santonin. In the base-induced equilibration of three pairs of compounds, chamaecynone and isochamaecynone, 4βH,5β-13-noreudesm-11-yn-3-one and 4αH,5β-13-noreudesm-11-yn-3-one, and 4βH,5β-13-noreudesm-11-en-3-one and 4αH,5β-13-noreudesm-11-en-3-one, the ΔH values were determined to be +1.47 kcal/mol, +0.77 kcal/mol, and −2.28 kcal/mol respectively.
