Selective chemical hits are required for feeding the initial discovery phase of the anti-tuberculosis therapeutics pipeline. These chemical entities should ideally target novel mechanisms of action in order to tackle drug resistance in Mycobacterium tuberculosis. In this work, hydroxycinnamic acid and acetamidophenol skeleta were employed for assessing the effects of constitutional isomerism on in vitro anti-TB activity. The whole cell evaluation of minimum inhibitory concentration values of different substituted cinnamic acids and acetamidophenols showed that the free ortho hydroxyl group conferred both potency and selectivity. Both 2-coumaric acid and 2-acetamidophenol showed minimum inhibitory concentration below 150 μM against M. tuberculosis H37Rv and selectivity index higher than 30.
Carboxylic acid esters of zosteric acid for prevention of biofouling

Carboxylic acid ester derivatives of zosteric acid are effective in preventing biofouling and are readily formulated into coatings or films. Coating or film compositions of the esters, and methods for their application, are provided which reduce the dissolution of the esters into water or loss to the environment. The Zosteric acid esters of the invention appear to function by preventing adhesion of an organism to a surface rather than by acute toxic activity rendering said compositions more environmentally acceptable.

The synthesis and purification of zosteric acid is described. The specification describes methods for preparing p-coumaric acid, for preparing zosteric acid, and purifying zosteric acid. Zosteric acid is prepared from p-coumaric acid. Zosteric acid, however, need not be prepared by any particular method to be purified by a method of the invention. All three methods may be used in combination to prepare and purify zosteric acid.
