  • Method for reducing intraocular pressure using indole derivatives
The present invention provides a method of reducing intraocular pressure by administering pharmaceutical compositions comprising indole derivatives. The pharmaceutical compositions useful in this invention comprise indole derivatives and melatonin analogs of Formulae I-IV. A preferred embodiment is a method of lowering intraocular pressure using 5-(methoxycarbonylamino)-N-acetyltryptamine (5-MCA-NAT), also known as GR 135531, which has a prolonged duration of action and greater efficacy in lowering intraocular pressure compared to melatonin. The present invention further provides a method of treating disorders associated with ocular hypertension, and a method of treating various forms of glaucoma; the method comprises administering an effective dose of a pharmacuetical composition comprising an indole derivative with or without agents commonly used to treat such disorders. 1

The invention pertains to methods and compositions for preventing or reducing microbial contamination using a silver (III) periodate as antimicrobial active hi a preferred embodiment the silver (III) periodate is used in a coating upon a medical device or implant to confer coating uniformity and antimicrobial efficacy. Also provided is a method of synthetising a silver (III) periodate in high yield by heating a source of single valency silver ions in water and subsequently combining it with a heated solution comprising persulfate, a hy droxide, and a periodate.
  • Bound aggregate composition and support and method of making and using the same to support flowers
AGRITEC, INC.
A composition which forms a firm, bound aggregate-water support for floral arrangements with 60%-80% by weight water. The composition comprises a water-insoluble, water-retaining binder, such as a particulate, water-insoluble, water-swellable, cross-linked polymer, and inert non-packing, highly porous water-trapping, aggregate particles dispersed throughout, the particles being present in an amount and having a bulk density and surface area effective to disperse the composition through-out the water as the composition is added to it without hand kneading or stirring. Only sufficient binder, 0.1% to 5.0% by weight, is present to firmly bind the aggregate particles together. Rice hull ash is prefered as the aggregate and the preferred binder is acrylonitrile-starch graft copolymer. The composition can be added to water in a container of any size or shape in an amount sufficient to form the bound aggregate and the composition sinks in and disperses throughout the water and forms a support without the need for mixing with a mixer or kneading with the hands. The aggregate-water support is also used for rooting of some plants and transporting cut flowers.
