A gold-catalyzed intramolecular insertion reaction of strictly unactivated C(sp3)−H bonds is described. The reaction uses readily available starting materials and benefits from extremely simple reaction conditions. A library of structurally diverse scaffolds bearing a C(sp2)−Br bond has been obtained. Diacetylenic alcohols were synthesized by the Glazer reaction of 1-alkynes with 1-alkyn-omega -ols. p-and m-Alkadiyne bezoic acid derivatives were prepared by the Cadiot-Hodkiewicz reaction of p- and m-ethynylbenzoic acid with 1-bromoalkynes.

amphiphiles with carbohydrate headgroups can be assembled on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) to generate nanometer-resolution carbohydrate patterns, with individual linear carbohydrateassemblies up to nearly 1 μm, and microscale geometric patterns. These are then photopolymerized and covalently transferred to the surfaces of hydrogels. This strategy suspends carbohydrate patterns on a relatively
