A process for the preparation of pyrrolidone-5-carboxylic acid/metal salt/amine complexes by reacting 1 mol of a L-glutamic acid lower alkyl ester/metal salt complex with 1 mol of an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic-aliphatic damine or 2 mols of an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic monoamine in a polar solvent, with the elimination of 2 mols of alcohol. The complex compounds prepared according to the invention are valuable curing agents for epoxide resins.

Abstract Common impurities in the phosgenation of α -amino acids to produce their N-carboxyanhydride (NCA) derivatives include hydrogen chloride and the hydrochloride salt of the starting amino acid. These impurities can be effectively removed by washing the reaction mixture with water and aqueous bicarbonate at 0 °C prior to isolation of the NCA., despite the well known sensitivity of the NCA to water
A composition suitable for topical application to mammalian skin and hair for inducing, maintaining or increasing hair growth comprises a hair growth promoter chosen from glutamic acid derivatives and salts thereof. The composition preferably also comprises an activity enhancer which may be chosen from hair growth stimulants, penetration enhancers and cationic polymers.
