  Total synthesis of enantiopure (R)-(-)-massoialactone was achieved. The key step includes the asymmetric hydrogenation of an achiral beta-keto ester using a ruthenium-SYNPHOS (R) catalyst to set the hydroxyl function in a stereocontrolled manner with excellent enantioselectivity (> 99% ee).
