A first total synthesis and structural revision of chromomoric acid D-I methyl ester 1 were described. Addition of organolithium reagent 13 to epoxy ketone 10 followed by regio- and stereospecific reductive ring opening afforded diol 16 which, after PDC oxidation and aldol condensation, gave rise to dienone 19.
