When (−)humulone is forced to absorb seven moles of hydrogen (catalytic hydrogenation), the principal product (40%) is 2,4-di-(3-methyl)butyl-6-(3-methyl)-butanoyl-resorcinol. This fact and other evidence indicates that the correct enol form of (−)humulone is II in Chart I.
