    Oxochlorins and dioxoisobacteriochlorins, which can be prepared from readily synthesised porphyrins, have been used as starting materials to develop mild, efficient methods (a) for reductive removal of the oxo-functionality to yield chlorins and isobacteriochlorins and (b) for attachment of an allyl substituent at the macrocyclic carbon bearing the oxo-functionality. It has been demonstrated that the allyl group can act as a precursor of a propionate residue, a group commonly present in the natural porphinoids.

    Studies with model compounds have led to the development of effective methods for (a) linking the pyrrolic rings to the reduced rings present in the isobacteriochlorin system (e.g.4) and (b) for introducing the carbon at C-5 required to complete the macrocycle. In the course of this work, many new pyrrolic systems have been prepared and characterised.

    12-Methylisobacteriochlorins, which are important for future research on the biosynthesis of vitamin B12, have been prepared by two methods from isobacteriochlorins carrying a 12-acetic acid residue; enzymic methylation of the 12-methyl analogue of uro'gen-III has yielded the 12-methyl analogue of sirohydrochlorin.
