Using 8‐isopropylquinoline N‐oxides as oxidants, the reactions of o‐ethynylanisoles afford versatile 3‐coumaranones in moderate to good isolated yields. The synthetic utility of this chemistry is also indicated by the synthesis of the natural product sulfuretin.
