  (±)-Compressanolide was obtained from the perhydroazulenic lactone via a 5-step sequence. Lactone could be used as an intermediate for the synthesis of (±)-estafiatin via epimerization of the dehydrated ketones and to cis-fused . These constitute the first total syntheses in this area.
