  Abstract Prosapogenin was obtained by alkaline hydrolysis of Gleditsia saponin GS-C (echinoeystic acid 3, 28-O-bisdesmoside), a new triterpenoid saponin isolated from Gleditsia japoinica. Prosapogenin was shown on the basis of chemical and physicochemical data to be echinocystic acid 3-O-β- d -xylopyranosyl-(1–2)-α- l -arabinopyranosyl-(1–6)-β- d -glucopyranoside.

  Three triterpenoid saponins were isolated from legumes of Gleditsia japonica cv.'Saponifera'(Leguminosae). These saponins are rare examples of triterpenoid saponins containing monoterpenes. The desmonoterpenyl compound, C74H120O38, [α]23D -42.3°(MeOH), which was obtained from them by alkali hydrolysis with K2CO3, was characterized as a 3, 28-O-bisglycoside on the basis of physical data and degradation products.

  Three triterpenoid saponins, gymnocladus saponins A (12), B (18) and C (20), were isolated from the fruits of Gymnocladus chinensis BAILLON (Leguminosae).   Six oleanene-oligoglycosides named azukisaponins I (1), II (2), III (3), IV (4), V, and VI were isolated from azuki beans, the seeds of Vigna angularis (WILLD.) OHWI et OHASHI (Leguminosae). Among them, the structures of azukisaponins I, II, III, and IV were elucidated as 3-O-[β-D-glucopyranosyl (1→2)-β-D-glucuronopyranosyl] sophoradiol (1), 3-O-[β-D-glucopyranosyl (1→2)-β-D-glucuronopyranosyl] soyasapogenol B (2), 3-O[β-D-glucopyranosyl (1→2)-β-D-glucuronopyranosyl] azukisapogenol (3), and 3-O-(β-D-glucopyranosyl)-28-O-[β-D-glucopyranosyl (1→6)-β-D-glucuronopyranosyl] gypsogenic acid (4), respectively on the basis of chemical and physicochemical evidence.
