2-(4-pyridyl)-5-aryloxazoles and certain quaternary salts of these compounds are useful as visible-wavelength lasing dyes. These dyes are used in solution with non-interferring polar solvents, such as low molecular weight alcohols, H.sub.2 O, and D.sub.2 O, to form lasing media useful in dye lasers. Such lasers generally include a reservoir for containing the laser dye solution and a pumping energy source operably coupled therewith for producing stimulated emission of the dye solution.

A dye laser comprising a solid styate laser medium and a pumping energy sce, the laser medium comprising a lasing concentration of a water or alcohol soluble organic dye which is incorporated into a hydrolyzed silicon organometallic solution, and forming a gel which is dried to form a transparent silicate glass which is doped with the organic dye.

We have developed a combinatorial method for the fast and effective synthesis of a library based on a known fluorescent dye, Dapoxyl(TM) using parallel solution-phase chemistry. By screening the 140 new compounds using fluorescence-based assays, we identified three new fluorescent dyes with novel properties. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
