(7,8-didemethyl-8-hydroxy-5-deazariboflavin), the flavin moiety of Methanobacterium coenzyme F420, and its 7-methyl analog were prepared by acid-catalyzedreaction of appropriately substituted 6-(N-D-ribitylanilino)uracils with trimethyl or triethylorthoformate followed by deprotection.
