A photocatalytic synthesis of homoallyl ketones was achieved via a one-pot procedure starting from a Norrish Type I reaction of cyclopentanones, followed by a decatungstate-catalyzed hydroacylation of electron-deficient olefins by the resulting 4-pentenals. The site-selective formyl H-abstraction in the second step can be explained by radical polar effects in the transition state.

A preparatively useful one‐step transformation of γ,γ‐disubstituted α‐formyl‐γ‐lactones into trisubstituted γ,δ‐unsaturated aldehydes is described, by means of catalytic amounts of either AcOH or AcOEt in the vapor phase over a glass support. A mechanistic rationale is proposed.

Terminal alkynes and allyl alcohol are coupled, with carbonâcarbon bond formation, in the presence of a RuIV(C5Me5) catalyst, to give γδ-unsaturated acetals and with [RuCl(C5Me5)}4] or [RuCl(cod)(C5Me5)] preferentially to produce the branched γ,δ-unsaturated aldehydes.
