    Niobium/Rhodium Bimetallic Complexes: Synthesis, Structure, and Catalytic Hydrosilylation of Acetophenone and Benzaldehyde

    Reactions of new imido phosphido complex, Cp2Nb(=NBu')(PPh2) (1), with olefin complexes of rhodium afford two types of compounds. With [(mu-Cl)Rh(C2H4)(2)](2), an imido/phosphido-bridged complex, Cp(Cl)Nb(mu-NBu')(mu-PPh2)RhCp (2), characterized by NMR and X-ray diffraction, was prepared. Formation of 2 represents a rare example of a Cp/Cl exchange reaction in organometallic chemistry. When 1 reacts with [mu-Cl)Rh(COD)](2), the target phosphido-bridged bimetallic complex Cp2Nb(=NBu')(mu-PPh2)Rh(Cl)(COD) (4) is formed. The structure of this product was established by NMR and an X-ray diffraction study. Both 2 and 4 are catalyst procursors for hydrosilylation of benzaldehyde and acceptophenone. The activity of the neutral complex 4 exceeds that of the cation [Cp2Nb(NBu')(PPh2)Rh(COD)]+ derived from 4 by chloride anion abstraction.

    reaction of the appropriate magnesium reagent MgRCl with the metallocene complexes [Nb(NBut)Cp2Cl] or [Nb(NAr)Cp2Cl]. The hydrolysis of 3 gave the oxo-alkyl complex [Nb(O)Cp2Me] (8). The molecular structure of 8 has been determined by X-ray diffraction studies.

    The compound [Nb(η-C5H5)2(NBut)Cl] has been synthesised and its crystal structure determined. It is the precursor for the new compounds [Nb(η-C5H5)2(NBut)Me], [Nb(η-C5H5)2(NBut)Br], [Nb(η-C5H5)2(NBut)(C6H5CH2)] and [Nb(η-C5H5)2(NBut)(σ-C3H5)], and the hydrido derivative [Nb(η-C5H5)2(NBut)H].

    The halfsandwich complexes [(η-C5R5)Nb(NtBu)Cl2](R  H (1), Me (2)) and [(η5-C5R5)Ta(Nt Bu)Cl2] (R  H (4), Me (5)) are synthezised by reacting the precursors (η5-C5R5)MCl4 with tBuNH2 in the presence of bases such as tBuNH2, LiNHtBu and LiNtBu(SiMe3).
